SEEING LIGHT: Understanding and Controlling Available Light
TBD 2008 | 2 - Sat | 9am-1pm

The word “photography” means “writing with light”. Controlling light separates the intentional photographer from the snap shooter. By developing your understanding of three basic concepts of light – its quality, quantity and direction – you can significantly improve the success of your images, whether portrait, still life or landscape.

This course helps you develop your ability to observe, identify, manipulate and control available light through the study of photographers and their photographs, and in-depth discussion of photographic and lighting concepts. This class does not require you to buy or learn to use expensive lighting equipment. Emphasis is on using available light to your advantage, and becoming familiar with simple and inexpensive artificial light sources that can help you to make better and stronger images.

Weekly assignments give you the opportunity to apply the concepts presented in class to the way you make photographs. Photographers working in both film and digital are welcome.
